Surfing excellence

The Mooloolaba State School Surfing Excellence program is designed to enhance the skills of surfers who are aiming to surf at a higher level. Students involved in the program have the opportunity to be selected in the school surfing team which participates in interschool competitions.

The program consists of weekly surf training with the Maroochy Surf School, fortnightly pool and gym sessions along with skateboard training.

Prior to expressing an interest, both the parents and students need to fully understand the level of commitment involved. We understand that these requirements may not suit all families and if they do not, your child would not be available for selection. To assist us with selection please consider carefully if you believe your child has the required surfing ability and desire for the program.  Numbers are restricted for reasons of management and safety guidelines.  We also place a strong influence on gender balance as many competitions we attend need mixed teams.

Student’s commitment required

  • Students must attend all training sessions (beach, pool, gym, and skateboarding). Entering competitions is optional.
  • All members of this program are expected to maintain a very high level of acceptable behaviour in all school activities and classroom time.
  • Students must maintain a very high level of effort in all subjects at Mooloolaba State School and have a pre-existing record of this level of effort in past years.
  • Students must be a strong swimmer.
  • Students must have a competent level of ability in surfing for their age group. This program is based on increasing the student’s existing surfing level.  This is not a beginner level surf program and students must be already capable of standing on their surfboard.

Parent’s commitment required

  • Parents must be able to attend all surf sessions or have an organised carer do so. This person cannot be one of our attending staff as per policy guidelines. This is required should an injury or other circumstance occur where by you will be required at the location.  It is not permissible to drop off and collect at the end of the surf session. Students may be dropped off and picked up at gym and pool sessions.
