Student services and support programs


School Chaplains hold a unique position in the community. Since Scripture Union Queensland first introduced a Chaplain to a State school in 1990, Chaplaincy Services have been implemented in more than 600 schools across Queensland.
Our chaplain is a positive role model and mentor for our students and facilitates care responses to families in need in our local school community. The School Chaplain at Mooloolaba State School also provides optional services to support and care for student spiritual, ethical and emotional needs through pastoral care.
The Chaplain helps students find a better way to deal with a wide range of issues ranging from social support, family issues and trauma response. She provides a listening ear for students in crisis and for those who just need a friend. Students must have parent consent to work with or get individual support from the chaplain.
Roles and Activities
The School Chaplain’s role and activities are determined by the Local Chaplaincy Committee, approved through the P&C and managed by the Principal’s delegates.

Our Chaplain is on campus 4 days per week and can be contacted via email or by phoning the school.

The Chaplain provides support for staff members, parents and families in the school community. The chaplain works with the student support team which includes – The Guidance Officer, Principal and Deputy Principal, and Support staff.

The chaplain supports the school community through a wide range of activities. These include:
  • pastoral care for students on spiritual and personal matters
  • pastoral care for local families in need
  • a variety of age appropriate activities to enhance students’ self-esteem and resilience
  • specific programs in conjunction with outside support agencies
  • coordinating special events and lunchtime groups
  • linking students to Youth Events, SU Holiday camps
  • providing links to religious-based support services
  • coordinating programs on a range of social concerns such as drug education, friendship programs and resilience building activities.

Today, more than ever, young people need the positive influence of people committed to their emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Chaplaincy provides a listening ear and a helping hand to help young people make the most of their growing years.


Complaints handling process
Under this Program, a complaint is described as an expression of concern or dissatisfaction following an incident or pattern of behaviour by a NSCSWP funded chaplain or in relation to a particular NSCSWP service or funding recipient. Complaints can also relate to any aspect of the NSCSWP. All complaints about the school chaplain or the chaplaincy service should be directed to the Principal in the first instance. All attempts are made to resolve complaints at the local level in the first instance. If the complaint cannot be resolved at the school level or the complainant does not wish the matter to be dealt with at the local level, then the complaint will be escalated to the Scripture Union, (the Funding Recipient) or to the Department of Education, Employment
and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). All Code of Conduct matters and significant complaints are referred by the Principal to Scripture Union (the Funding Recipient). The Chaplain has signed a ‘Code of Conduct for School Chaplains under the National School Chaplaincy and Student Welfare Program’.  The school has a Risk Management Plan that outlines strategies to address complaints made against the school Chaplain.
Queensland state schools embrace a multitude of cultural, religious and non-religious beliefs and encourage students to grow and develop as a whole person, in particular, in beliefs, values and attitudes. State schools respect the background and beliefs of all students and staff by not promoting, or being perceived as promoting, any particular set of beliefs in preference to another.
Queensland state schools provide religious instruction in accordance with Chapter 5 of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 Adobe PDF document External Link (EGPA) and Part 5 of the Education (General Provisions) Regulations 2006 Adobe PDF document External Link (EGPR) by making available up to one hour per week for the provision of religious instruction to students (except Prep students) who are members of a faith group that has approval to deliver religious instruction at the school.
Delivering a religious instruction program
In accordance with s.27 EGPR, religious leaders approve the program of religious instruction to be used by their accredited representatives as religious instructors. The religious leaders are responsible for the quality of the religious instruction program that is to be delivered in schools and are required to screen their accredited representatives, provide them with ongoing support and training and ensure they are delivering only the authorised program.  Religious instructors are required to maintain accreditation with their faith group, have a current and valid Blue Card and deliver only the authorised program of the faith group. As part of school-based induction, religious instructors are required to complete Student Protection and Code of Conduct training.
Participation in RI is not compulsory.
Any student (except Prep students) may participate in RI if a parent has given consent and indicated a religion, on the Application for Student Enrolment Form or in other written advice to the principal. Any child not participating in RI, or whose nominated religion is not represented within the RI program/s at the school, will receive other instruction by a qualified member of school staff in a separate location during the time RI is held. Other instruction will relate to subject areas that have already been covered in class. At any time, parents may provide written instruction to the principal to change their preference for their child to participate in or be withdrawn from RI.
